RSS Band Students Perform with UNCG Carolina Band Festival

On February 14-16, 2019 UNC-Greensboro hosted their 30th Annual Carolina Band Festival and Conductors Conference.  One of the premier honor bands in the area, students are selected by audition from across the southeastern US.  Rowan-Salisbury was represented by 7 students from across the county, including JJ Giddings on trombone.  He had the opportunity to perform under the direction of Col. Michael Colburn, formerly the director of the US Marine Band!

​West Rowan Students Featured with Salisbury Symphony

On January 27th, three WRHS students had the opportunity to perform with the Salisbury Symphony on their "Stars!" Concert.  Abe Long, JJ Giddings and Dylan Lord performed on the concert opener - music from the new Star Trek.  Later, JJ and Dylan performed as featured soloists on Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Horns.  They are pictured here with the three soloists from East Rowan along with Dr. David Hagy, Conductor of the Salisbury Symphony!  Great job by everyone!

​WRHS Students Selected for UNC-Charlotte Honor Band

The second weekend in December always plays host to the UNC-Charlotte Honor Band Clinic.  This year, West Rowan had 7 students accepted to perform:  Jude (saxophone), Abe (trumpet), JJ (trombone), Dylan (euphonium), Kurt (string bass), Rayne (percussion) and Sean (percussion).  Students rehearsed under UNCC directors Dr. Shawn Smith and Dr. Jennifer Whitaker.  Congratulations to these students on a job well done!

WRHS Students Selected for UNC-Wilmington Honor Band

The first weekend in December always plays host to the UNCW Honor Band Clinic.  This year, RSS had 21 students selected from 4 different schools, including 7 from West Rowan:  Jude (saxophone), Abe (trumpet), JJ (trombone), Eric (euphonium), Dylan (euphonium), Kurt (string bass) and Sean (percussion).  Students rehearsed under UNCW director Dr. Talanca and David Robinson, director at Panther Creek HS.  Congratulations to these students on a job well done!

"Marching Falcons" March in 2018 'Tis the Season Parade

On Wednesday, Nov. 21st - the day before Thanksgiving - the "Marching Falcons" are thankful for their surrounding communities and helped to ring in the holiday season with the 'Tis the Season Spectacular Parade through Spencer and Salisbury.  Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays to all of our West Rowan family and friends!

"Marching Falcons" Small Ensemble Honors Veterans

On Monday, November 12th, all the Rowan County bands prepared to participate in our Veterans Day Ceremonies... but the weather had other plans, delivering a cold, rainy day.  However, that didn't stop the bands from honoring our veterans!  Each band put together a small ensemble and performed their parade music and then combined for a joint performance of "America" for residents at both the Lutheran Home and the Retirement Community at Trinity Oaks!

"Marching Falcons" at Porter Ridge Pirate Cove Classic!

On Saturday, October 27th, the "Marching Falcons" performed their last competitive show of the 2018 season at the Porter Ridge High School Pirate Cove Classic in Indian Trail, NC.  Against solid competition, the "Marching Falcons" ended the day with awards for 2nd Place Music, 3rd Place General Effect, 2nd Place Percussion and 2nd Place Colorguard.  It was a great performance (and a beautiful sunset!) to wrap up the 2018 competition season!

"Marching Falcons" Honor 13 Students at "Senior Night"

On Thursday (due to weather) October 25th, West Rowan hosted their annual "Senior Night" recognizing senior athletes before the football game and marching band seniors during halftime.  There are 13 wonderful students in 2018 "Marching Falcons" Senior Class and we hope your senior year is the best yet!  Best of luck in your future endeavors!

"Marching Falcons" Perform at North Lincoln "Roundtable"

On Saturday, October 6th, the "Marching Falcons" traveled to the North Lincoln High School "Roundtable Tournament of Bands" for their competitive season opener.  After a long (and hot!) day, the band played a great show earning 2nd Place Music Performance, 2nd Place General Effect, 2nd Place Percussion and 2nd Place Overall in Class 1A.  Great job!

​2018 "8th Grade Invitational" Draws Largest Crowd Ever!

On Friday, October 5th, the "Marching Falcons" hosted their annual "8th Grade Invitational" drawing a record number of participants from West Rowan and Southeast Middle Schools!  The students rehearsed with student leaders after school, performed an opening fanfare, the national anthem and a tunnel for the team, as well as playing in the stands the first half of the game.  Students then got a front row seat to the halftime show!  Thanks to everyone for coming out!

​"Marching Falcons" Wow the Crowd at 2018 Preview Show!

On Saturday, September 22nd, the "Marching Falcons" participated in the 2018 Rowan County Marching Band Preview.  The afternoon began with masterclasses from collegiate faculty and professional musicians working with students around campus.  The national anthem was performed by a mixed brass ensemble, each school performed their half-time show, and the evening concluded with a mass performance of "America."  Great job to ALL of our band students!

​ "Marching Falcons" Perform at Oak Park Tailgate Party

On Tuesday, September 18th, the WRHS Marching Band gave up their usual day of practice to visit our friends at Oak Park Retirement Community.  Activities director, Karen Leonard, was hosting a Carolina Panthers Tailgate Party and the band provided entertainment with all of their Friday night stands tunes and a standstill performance of the halftime show.  Thanks to all who were able to participate in bringing the band experience to Oak Park's Tailgate Party!

WRHS Performs Anthem for the Woodleaf Tomato Festival

​On Saturday, August 18th, Abe, Johne, Sammy, JJ, Dylan and Jaden provided the national anthem for the annual Woodleaf Tomato Festival held at Unity Presbyterian Church.  The festival features local music groups, dancers, arts, crafts, vendors, food and all manner of tomatoes, tomato recipes, tomato queens, tomato eating contests and much more!  If you missed it, be sure to come out next year!

​2018 Band Camp Ends with Successful Preview Show!

The 2018 season began in mid July with staff retreat, a week of sectionals and then a week of full band rehearsal.  This year, we battled rain off and on for weeks but still wrapped up with our annual Band Camp Preview where students showcased musical and visual techniques, pre-game for Friday night and about 4 minutes of their 2018 production entitled, "The Sounds of Silence."  It's going to be a great season!  Be sure to come check them out in person!

West Rowan Alum Performs with Phantom Regiment

On July 29th, the Marching Falcons traveled to Wake Forest's BB&T Field to watch the 31st edition of NightBeat, a Drum & Bugle Corps competition.  This year, we had the privilege of  watching WRHS Alum, Matthew Langford (Class of 2015), in his second season with Phantom Regiment.  Matthew is among the growing number of West Rowan graduates to join the ranks of Drum Corps International, and also serves as the head drum major at ASU.  We're proud of all our students, both current and former, and wish the best of luck to those auditioning for the 2019 season of DCI!

2018 West Rowan Student Leadership Staff Retreat

For several days prior to band camp, the student leadership team for the "Marching Falcons" participated in their annual "staff retreat" focusing on team-building, problem-solving, character-development, conflict-resolution, planning for the upcoming season and more!  There were a lot of difficult tasks and conversations, but the group did a great job and enjoyed a healthy dose of fun and bonding.  We're already excited for the 2018 season!  :-D

Graduation Ceremony: Congratulations, Class of 2018!
Congratulations to our 2018 seniors as they walked the stage to receive their diplomas!  We are very proud of each and every one of you and know that you will all go on using your talents to make the world a better place.  Special thanks to the graduation band for showing up VERY early and providing music for the ceremony.  Congratulations once again to our seniors!  Now, everyone can enjoy some time off... Summer is officially here!  Have fun and be safe!

WRHS Brass Quintet Plays at the Patriot's Flag Concourse
The third Saturday in May is also known as Armed Services Day and, at the Patriots Flag Concourse and Memorial located in Hurley Park, that means a flag changing ceremony.  The WRHS Brass Quintet (Abe, Dylan, JJ, Jaden and Mr. T.) performed the services songs for each branch of the military during the changing of their respective colors.  It was a great ceremony!  Thanks to these students for volunteering their time, and to all our military for your service!


East & West Rowan Drums Lead Relay for Life Survivor Lap
On Friday, April 27th, volunteers from across the area met at the Rowan County Fairgrounds for the county's annual "Relay for Life" to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  After the Opening Ceremony, National Anthem and "roll call," the "Survivor Lap" began place with great ceremony - led by a cadence played by 8 volunteers from the East and West Rowan High School Drum Lines.   We were honored to be part of the festivities!

WRHS Percussionists Accompany Rowan Youth Orchestra
On Wednesday, April 25, The Salisbury Symphony Youth Orchestra (under the direction of SSO Violinist Marguerite Keller, performed for the residents at Oak Park Retirement Community.  After a dress rehearsal the previous week, Sean and Ashton were guest performers on timpani and drumset for a movement from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Cold Play's "Viva la Vida."   The concert was excellent - great job guys!


WRHS Bands Perform for Oak Park Retirement Community
On Monday, March 26th, the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble from West Rowan High School gave a short concert after dinner to the residents of Oak Park Retirement Community.  Part of the band's annual spring concert series, the performance always brings a smile to the residents and is a great opportunity to give back to our community!  The groups performed high-energy pieces as well as lyrical works.  It was a great night of music and friends!

WRHS Band/Chorus Members Help to Host EdCamp Rowan
On Saturday, March 24th, the Rowan Salisbury Student Leadership Team (including WRHS Band members Jenny and Robet) hosted EdCamp Rowan - a professional development day for teachers in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools and in other districts across the state.  The day included engaging sessions, t-shirts, door-prizes, and more.  The day ended with an "App Smackdown" for both teachers and students.  Students are pictured here with Dr. Moody.  Great job guys!


WRHS Wind Ensemble Receives "Superior" Rating at MPA!
On March 22, the West Rowan Wind Ensemble traveled to perform at the SCDBA Music Performance Assessment with a fun (but demanding!) Grade V program: Grays Harbor March (Steve Hodges), Sleep (Eric Whitacre), and Undertow (John Mackey).  After a great stage performance, the wind ensemble went on to sightreading where they also received high marks for an overall rating of "Superior."  Congratulations again on a fantastic performance!

WRHS Student Performs with Fusion Indoor Percussion
West Rowan percussionist, Mason, can be seen here performing with Fusion Percussion in their 2017-2018 Program, "The Wrath of the Norsemen."  Their program revolves around the Vikings expanding their influence across Europe in the early 8th - 11th Centuries.  From organizing raiding parties to demonstrating personal aspects of their lives, Fusion is delving into both the light and dark aspects of Viking life.  Mason has traveled to several competitions this spring and will compete with Fusion in the WGI Championships in Dayton, OH this April.  We're proud of you - good luck!


East and West Rowan Combine for Early Spring Concert
On Tuesday, March 6th, the band programs of East and West Rowan High Schools combined for a joint concert featuring the combined Concert Bands from both schools as well as the East Rowan and West Rowan Wind Ensembles in a "Pre-MPA" performances.  It was a great night of collaboration and learning as the combined group played a selection with each director, while both wind ensembles received feedback from both directors.  Great job by everyone!

12 West Students Perform with 2018 All-County Honor Band
On February 23-24, West Rowan HS had 12 students perform in the All-County Honor Band: Jenny (flute), Jessica (flute), Robert (alto sax), Abe (trumpet), Sammy (horn), JJ (trombone), Daria (trombone), Samantha (trombone), Dylan (baritone), Rayne (mallets), Sean (mallets) and Samiyah (percussion).  Students got the opportunity to work with Patricia Hughes Ball, Director of Bands at West Forsyth HS and a member of the UNCG Summer Music Camp conducting staff.  With only a day and a half of rehearsal, students performed a concert on Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the Middle School Honor Band.  Congratulations to all our All-County participants - great job!


6 WRHS Students Perform at UNCG Carolina Band Festival
On February 15-17, 2018 UNC-Greensboro hosted their 29th Annual Carolina Band Festival and Conductors Conference.  One of the premier honor bands in the area, students are selected by audition from across the southeastern US.  West Rowan was fortunate to have 6 students attend this year: Abe (trumpet), JJ (trombone), Brandon (trombone), Dylan (baritone), Alex (percussion) and Harmony (percussion).  Students rehearsed with Dr. Elizabeth Peterson (9-10 Honor Band) and Dr. Stephen Peterson (11-12 Honor Band) from the University of Illinois.  Great job guys, we're proud of you!

WRHS Students Perform in 2nd Annual WCU Honor Band
On January 25-27, Western Carolina University hosted their 2nd annual Catamount High School Honor Band.  West Rowan students Payton (trombone), J.J. (trombone), Eric (euphonium) and Alex (percussion) traveled to Cullowhee and performed under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb (State University of New York at Fredonia) and Dr. Margaret Underwood (Western Carolina University).  Great job, guys - we're proud of you!   "Go Cats!" ;-)


WRHS Students Perform in 2nd Annual UNCC Honor Band
On December 8-9, UNCC hosted their 2nd annual Honor Band.  West Rowan was fortunate to have 7 students selected: Jenny (Flute), Evan (Bari Sax), Abe (Trumpet), Payton (Trombone), JJ (Trombone), Eric (Baritone), and Alex (Percussion).  Students performed under the direction of Dr. Shawn Smith and Dr. Jeffrey Miller, UNCC's Director and Associate Director of Bands.  In addition to a great concert, students received scholarship offers from UNCC as well!

WRHS Students Selected for 8th Annual UNCW Honor Band
The first weekend in December always plays host to the UNCW Honor Band Clinic.  This year, RSS had 21 students selected from 4 different schools, including 5 from West Rowan:  Jenny (flute), Nick (bass clarinet), Robert (saxophone), Abe (trumpet), and Alex (percussion).  Students first auditioned for chair placements, and rehearsed under the direction of UNCW director Dr. Talanca or grammy-winning band director Phillip Riggs, Director at the NC School of Science & Math.  Students had only 8 hours of rehearsal to prepare a huge program and were treated to concerts by all the UNCW Jazz Band, the UNCW Symphonic Band, campus tours and master classes with the award-winning UNCW music faculty.  Congratulations to these students on a job well done!


"Marching Falcons" in 2017 Mooresville Christmas Parade
On Tuesday, November 21st, the "Marching Falcons" participated in the 73rd annual Mooresville Christmas Parade.  The band joined thousands of other participants for one of the largest Mooresville Christmas Parades ever!  West Rowan hasn't visited the Mooresville Parade in recent years and 2017 shows that the "Marching Falcons" continue to support ALL areas of our community, from Mooresville to Salisbury and everywhere in between!

Veterans Day Parades Visit Trinity Oaks, VA and Salisbury
Each Veterans Day in Salisbury sees the arrival of a 3-fold parade:  A mini-parade around the Trinity Oaks Campus for the residents at the Lutheran Home and Retirement Buildings, a loop around the VA Hospital, and a parade down Main Street in Salisbury.  All six high school bands in Rowan County, including the "Marching Falcons," geared up early in the morning of November 11th to honor our veterans all over town.  Thank you to ALL of our veterans!


WRHS Students Attend 3rd Annual GWU Trumpet Summit
On October 30th, while most were enjoying a day out of school, two WRHS students (Abe and Johne) were getting up-close, 1-on-1 instruction from top professionals at Gardner-Webb University.  Students worked with Tim Hudson (Carolina Brass, Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass), James Ackley (concert artist, chamber soloist and clinician) and are pictured to the right with Charles Schleuter (retired principal trumpet, Boston Symphony Orchestra). Wow!

"Marching Falcons" Place 1st at ERHS "Mustang Classic!"
On Saturday, October 21st, the WRHS "Marching Falcons" traveled to the East Rowan "Mustang Classic."  After a GREAT performance, the "Marching Falcons" earned 2nd place awards for Marching and Drum Major, as well as 1st place honors for Music, General Effect, Percussion, Guard and were awarded 1st place overall in Class 2A.  Great job, guys!


WRHS "Marching Falcons" on Homecoming Court!
The 2017 WRHS Homecoming was held on Friday, October 13th.  But, thankfully, aside from some mild drizzle during the game, Friday the 13th didn't live up to its bad reputation and homecoming festivities went on as planned!  Congratulations to Trey Germano (Colorguard), Camryn Nooner (Drum Major) and Jude Smeltzer (Saxophone) who were all selected to be a part of the 2017 WRHS Homecoming Court.  Jude was a freshman representative while Trey and Camryn were members of the senior court.  Special congratulations to Camryn who was elected as the 2017 WRHS Homecoming Queen!

And the Winner of the John Deere Mower Raffle Is....
...Mr. Jason Chester!  After 2 months of ticket sales, the drawing for the winner of our John Deere D110 lawn mower was held during halftime at the WRHS vs. South Rowan football game on September 29th.  Principal, Dr. Jamie Durant, did the honors of pulling the winning ticket from the raffle drum after a brief halftime show.  Congratulations, Mr. Chester!  It's just in time to get that last cutting or two in for the season!  Thanks to everyone for their support!


West Rowan Hosts Rowan Marching Band Preview Show!
On Saturday, September 23rd, West Rowan HS hosted the 2017 Rowan County Marching Band Preview Show.  The afternoon began with masterclasses from top music educators (including professional players collegiate faculty) and then moved into the evening performances where each band performed their halftime show before combining all 6 schools for a mass performance of America, the Beautiful.  It was a great evening of fellowship and music for all!

County Bands Record Soundtrack for Literacy Video
In the evening of September 18th, students from the South, East, West and Carson High School band programs came together to record a soundtrack behind a literacy video being put together by Rowan-Salisbury Schools.  Special thanks to WRHS Band members Payton, Dylan, J.J. and Harmony for playing in our combined group for this project!

2017 Band Camp Ends with Successful Preview Show!

6th Annual WRHS Mattress Sale Fundraiser
On Saturday, July 29th, the West Rowan Band held it's 6th annual Mattress Sale.  With great products sold below retail - the money CFS (Custom Fundraising Solutions) saves on retail space and advertising goes to the band as profit, raising over $2,000 to the band program in just one day!  Mark and his team at CFS run a great event - and what a fun way to kick off the 2017 season!             Missed the sale, but still interested in looking at a mattress?  Just contact Mr. Trivette!

Drum Majors Attend Western Carolina "Summer Symposium"
While many folks were still out enjoying some time by the pool or sleeping late, the West Rowan Drum Majors (Savannah Henderson and Camryn Nooner) spent a week in mid July on campus at Western Carolina University learning about communication, leadership, problem-solving, conducting, score-study and more!  The symposium faculty are some of the top in the nation and the 18-hour days are full of excitement and learning.  They also got the opportunity to work with and observe Carolina Crown in-residence. Excellent work, ladies!  We're proud of you and know that you'll get the 2017 season off to a great start!

Successful First Day of 2017 Marching Band Wind Training!
The woodwind and brass sections of the 2017 "Marching Falcons" are officially up and running for the 2017 season!  At the end of May, students from the high school welcomed new, rising 9th grade, members from West Rowan and Southeast Middle into the band.  Everyone worked on musical and visual basics getting the season off to a great start!


2017 West Rowan High School Prom Queen - Emma Eremie!
The 2017 West Rowan High Sschool Prom was held on Saturday, May 13th and featured a theme of "Rustic Romance."  The festivities, of course, included the 2017 Prom Court and voting for the 2017 Prom Queen.  Congratulations to this year's queen - Emma Eremie!  Emma is a senior flute player, performs with the wind ensemble, was the uniform officer for the "Marching Falcons" this season and hopes to pursue a degree and career in pediatrics after graduation... which is only a few weeks away!  Congratulations again to Emma Eremie - a deserving young lady, beautiful inside and out!

East & West Rowan Drumlines Open for 2017 Relay for Life
On Saturday, May 6th, the combined drumlines from East and West Rowan High Schools made an appearance at the 2017 Relay for Life at the Rowan County Fairgrounds.  They started the opening ceremonies at 4:00pm, enjoyed some of the festivities, and then led the Survivor Lap at 6:00pm.  Thank you to everyone for spending your time with us at Relay and supporting such a wonderful cause here in Rowan County!


WRHS Band Members Assist with 6th Grade Recruiting
​On April 26-27, WRHS students assisted Mr. Bowman in recruiting for next year's 6th grade band at WRMS.  Students talked about band, demonstrated their instruments and answered questions from 5th graders - helping to build the future of our West Rowan Band Program.  As you can see from the picture, we also had a little fun along the way! ;-)

The West Rowan HS Band Goes to Walt Disney World!
April 6-9, 2017 found the WRHS Band headed south to Florida's Walt Disney World - the most magical place on Earth!  In addition to spending time in Epcot, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, the students participated in a "You're Instrumental" workshop conducted by Disney performing artists and recording engineers where they learned what it's like to rehearse, record and perform with the top musicians in the world.  The end product?  A DVD with scenes from Disney movies synced to a soundtrack recorded by the WRHS Band Program.  It was a great experience for everyone!

On March 28th, the Wind Ensemble traveled to the district's annual "Music Performance Assessment."  MPA allows groups to prepare their music to the highest level possible and then be evaluated by a distinguished judging panel.  Then, the ensemble must demonstrate their skills in the "sight-reading room."  Congrats again to the Wind Ensemble!

Saxophone Quartet Performs at St. Luke's Lutheran
On Saturday, March 18th, our saxophone quartet performed music for one of the great supporters of our band program - St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Mt. Ulla, NC.  The church was having their annual "Fish Fry" and the group provided music on stage for a bit during lunch time.  Special thanks to St. Luke's for all of their support and to Evan, Robert, Camryn and Madelyn for sharing their time and talents on a Saturday!


2017 West Rowan All-County Honor Band Members!
​On February 24-25, twelve of our WRHS band members participated in the 2017 All-County Honor Band Clinic.  Top students were selected from across the county to form the middle school and high school honor bands that put together a concert performance with only 10 hours of rehearsal.  High school students had the opportunity to rehearse and perform under the direction of legendary North Carolina band director, Mr. Bob Buckner.  Recently retired from Western Carolina University, Mr. Buckner is a member of both the Bands of America and NC Bandmasters "Hall of Fame" and is one of the most recognized figures in American bands today!  Check out some of the audio clips below!

WRHS Students Selected for UNCG Carolina Band Festival!
On Feb. 16-18, 10 Rowan-Salisbury band students performed at the Carolina Band Festival, including 3 from West Rowan: Abe Long, Sarah McCourt and Sarah West.  They participated in masterclasses and rehearsals with Dr. Sims (University of California) and Colonel Lowell Graham (US Air Force Band, retired conductor) and concluded with a GREAT concert!


WRHS Students Perform with Salisbury Symphony!
4 WRHS Band members (Sarah McCourt, Jillian Clary, Cheyenne Rowland and Dylan Lord), along with fellow musicians from East Rowan HS and Salisbury HS, were selected to perform in the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra's "educational concert," featuring the 5th Grade Honors Chorus, selected high school band students, members from the youth orchestra, and special guest, NASCAR's Kyle Petty!  Great concert guys, we're proud of you!

WRHS Students Selected for 2017 All-District Honor Band!
On Saturday, January 28th, Sarah McCourt and Jillian Clary were selected by audition to perform in the SCDBA 2017 All-District Honor Band held at Stuart-Cramer HS in Gastonia.  They rehearsed some of the best literature for wind band and performed with some of the best high school musicians in the state under the direction of famous music educator, Dr. Jack Stamp!  They also had the opportunity to perform the world-premiere of Dr. Stamp's new commissioned work, "Three Sketches for Wind Band."  Check out some of the recordings below from the final concert!


West Rowan Band Awarded NC Lions Club Lifetime Membership
At their meeting on Monday, January 16th, the Cleveland Lions Club honored the West Rowan High School Band with a NC Lions Club Lifetime Membership!  Mr. Nathan Bowman (Director of Bands, WRMS) assists with the high school program and was in attendance to accept the award on behalf of the band.  To the Lions Club: We are grateful for all that you and your organization have done, and continue to do, for our community.  We are humbled by your kind words and generosity.  We hope that we can continue to musically serve the West Rowan Community for many years!  We thank you again for this generous recognition!

Four WRHS Students to Perform with Salisbury Symphony!
Congratulations to our 4 students from West Rowan that were selected to perform in the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra's "educational concert," featuring the 5th Grade Honors Chorus, selected high school band students, members from the youth orchestra, and a special guest artist!  These students will perform on stage with the symphony at Keppel Auditorium (Catawba College) on Saturday, February 4th.  In addition to these four students, ALL students that APPLIED for this opportunity will receive the opportunity to participate in masterclasses with some of the SSO musicians that day.  Congratulations again to ALL our students!    CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE RESULTS!


6th Annual "Winter Winds" Play for Salvation Army Kettle
The volunteer group known as the "Winter Winds" is organized, rehearsed and operated by Cassidy and Camryn Nooner.  While many students were already enjoying time off on their 1st day out of school.  These students donated their time and efforts to help bring attention to a worthy cause.  We're so very proud of you guys!  You can check out the full article in the Salisbury Post by clicking HERE!  Merry Christmas everyone!

WRHS Students Selected for Western Carolina Honor Band!
On December 9-10, seven West Rowan students (Sarah McCourt, Jenny Cheng, Jillian Clary, Madelyn Dailey, Alex Ho, Harmony Priest, and Samiyah Wordsworth) performed with the Honor Band at WCU.  Students rehearsed under Dr. Robblee from Shenendoah Conservatory as well as Dr. Underwood and David Starnes from WCU.  Congrats guys!


"Marching Falcons" in Annual Cleveland Christmas Parade
On Saturday, December 3rd, the West Rowan Band participated in Cleveland's annual Christmas Parade.  This parade is always a lot of fun and a great way to wrap up the marching season in our community.  It's also a day where we welcome some 8th grade students to our ranks who are interested in joining us.  Great job by everyone!

WRHS Students Selected for 7th Annual UNCW Honor Band
The first weekend in December always plays host to the UNCW Honor Band Clinic.  This year, RSS had 17 students selected from 4 different schools, including 7 from West Rowan:  Sarah McCourt (flute), Jenny Cheng (flute), Jillian Clary (clarinet), Madelyn Dailey (alto sax), Robert Yount (alto sax), Mackenzie Koontz (tenor sax) and Elijah Long (trombone).  Students had only 8 hours of rehearsal to prepare a huge program and were treated to concerts by all of the UNCW ensembles as well as campus tours and master classes with the faculty.  Congratulations to these 7 students!


"Marching Falcons" March in 2016 Holiday Caravan Parade
On Wednesdsay, November 23rd, the "Marching Falcons" participated in the 57th annual Holiday Caravan Parade.  The band was one of 125 participants and was followed by Homecoming Queen (and clarinet player) Megan Smith!  When parade winners were announced afterward, the West Rowan FFA earned 1st Place in the Non-Business Float category and the "Marching Falcons" were named 1st Place Band!  Congratulations to everyone on a job well-done!

Veterans Day Parade visits Trinity Oaks, VA and Salisbury
Each Veterans Day in Salisbury sees the arrival of a 3-fold parade:  A mini-parade around the Trinity Oaks Campus to the Residents at the Lutheran Home and Retirement Buildings, a loop around the VA Hospital, and a parade down Main Street in Salisbury.  All six high school bands in Rowan County, including the "Marching Falcons," geared up early in the morning of November 11th to honor our veterans all over town.  Thank you to ALL of our veterans!


West Rowan Alum Performs at 2016 NCMEA Convention
The 2016 NCMEA Conference in Winston-Salem saw many great performances by professional, high school and collegiate ensembles on stage at the NCSA Stevens Center.  Among them was West Rowan Alumnus, Caroline Wood and the Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble.  Caroline plays flute (you can see her in the picture to the right) and is majoring in Music Education.  We're proud of you, Caroline!  :-)

"Marching Falcons" Celebrate 15 Seniors at Senior Night!
Friday, November 4th, was Senior Night at West Rowan High School.  There are 15 "Marching Falcon" seniors this year:  Sarah McCourt (Drum Major), Emma Eremie (Flute), Jillian Clary (Clarinet), Ashley Pope (Clarinet), Megan Smith (Clarinet), Alex Thomforde (Clarinet), Madelyn Dailey (Alto Sax), Mackenzie Koontz (Tenor Sax), Eli Long (Trombone), Cheyenne Rowland (Trombone), Leighann Brooks (Percussion), Briana Allman (Guard), Hailie Howard (Guard), Lexi Smith (Guard), and Amber Talbert (Guard).  Congratulations to our 2016-2017 Senior Class!


"Marching Falcons" Place 1st at 2016 "Pirate Cove Classic"
On Saturday, October 22nd, the "Marching Falcons" competed in their third and final show of the season at Porter Ridge High School in class 2A.  The band swept the 2A awards bringing home 1st place in EVERY caption (Drum Major, Percussion, Colorguard, Music, Marching and General Effect), was the highest scoring band overall in the 1A and 2A classes, and even outscored two of the 4A bands as well!  Congratulations on your final 2016 show - we're proud of you!

"Marching Falcons" Place 1st at 2016 "Mustang Classic!"
On Saturday, October 15th, the "Marching Falcons" competed against two other schools in class 2A and brought home awards for 1st place drum majors, 1st place percussion, 1st place music, 1st place general effect, 1st place marching as well as 1st place in Class 2A.  Congratulations on a great performance!  We're working hard to finish preparing for our last contest of the season at Porter Ridge next Saturday!  Go Falcons! :-D

"Marching Falcons" on Homecoming Court!
Camryn Nooner (Drum Major) and Megan Smith (Clarinetist/Vocalist) were both selected to be a part of the 2016 Homecoming Court.  Camryn was a junior representative while Megan was on the senior court.  We missed you in the stands, but you ladies looked beautiful on the field!  Special congratulations to Megan Smith who was elected the 2016 West Rowan High School Homecoming Queen!  We're proud of both of you and all that you do! :-)

Dr. Ron Turbyfill Returns to the Podium for Homecoming!
Dr. Ron Turbyfill (affectionally known to many as "Turb") returned to the podium Friday night for the 2016 Homecoming game to once again conduct the "Marching Falcons" for the National Anthem.  Dr. Turbyfill was the Director of Bands at West Rowan from 1979 - 1994, also teaching chorus for 11 of those 15 years.  You can find his complete bio on our Past Directors page!  We thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for West Rowan!

"Marching Falcons" Place 1st at "Showcase of Champions"
On Saturday, October 1st, the "Marching Falcons" performed at their first competition of the season - the Mt. Pleasant High School "Showcase of Champions."  At the awards ceremony, the band received 1st place in Class 1A including 1st Place Drum Major, Percussion, Colorguard, Music, Marching and General Effect.  A special thanks to all of the band parents who provided lunch, chaperoned the trip and moved all of our props/percussion for the weekend.  We couldn't do it without you.  Congratulations to EVERYONE at this year's "Showcase of Champions!"


Four Students Represent WRHS Band in RSS Data Meeting
On Friday, September 30th, Emma Eremie, Mackenzie Koontz, Madelyn Dailey and Sarah McCourt spoke with several representatives from the RSS Central Office including Dr. Julie Morrow (Asst. Superintendent) and Eisa Cox (Director of Secondary Education).  They explained the uses of SmartMusic in and out of the classroom, the process the WRHS Band uses to demonstrate proficiency of music theory scales as well as the process for tracking students through the four levels of Band - Beginning, Intermediate, Proficient and Advanced.  Thanks ladies for representing band so well! :-)

WRHS Drum Line Plays for Rowan-Salisbury Celebration!
On Thursday, September 1st, drum lines from East Rowan, West Rowan and Carson High Schools gathered at the Wallace Educational Forum to provide entertainment for the celebration of the district's improved test scores over the past year.  Originally planned to be at Bell Tower Park in downtown, the celebration was moved indoors due to weather.  Special thanks to the WRHS Drum Line for organizing themselves and representing WRHS well!


West Rowan Principal named RSS "Principal of the Year!"
Dr. Jamie Durant, Principal of West Rowan High School for the last 10 years, was named Rowan-Salisbury Schools' "Principal of the Year" at the 2016 Back-to-School Conference on August 23rd.  He will continue on to represent RSS at the regional level with other principals across NC.  You can read the full story HERE!

West Rowan "Marching Falcons" Debut NEW UNIFORMS!
On Friday, August 19th, the West Rowan "Marching Falcons" debuted a new look that was 16 years in the making.  The previous uniforms were all but falling to pieces and there were only 30 or so uniforms in complete working order.  Through the generosity of our WRHS Administration, businesses around the community and many band parents, students and alumni, the "Marching Falcons" came out "dressed to the nines" for the opening night of the 2016 football season.  Thanks to EVERYONE who made this possible!  However, the fundraising effort continues, as we still need about 20 more uniforms.  See the Salisbury Post article HERE!


WRHS Student Plays for RSS Beginning Teacher Breakfast
On Tuesday, August 9th, Sarah McCourt provided some entertainment in the form of solo flute while all of the Rowan-Salisbury administrators, central office personnel and newly-hired teachers for the 2016-2017 school year proceeded into the meeting room and ate breakfast.  Many folks commented on how talented she was and how much they enjoyed the music.  A big thank you to Sarah for again getting up early and representing West Rowan and the RSS Arts community so well!  Thanks for all that you do!

"Marching Falcons" Working Hard at Band Camp!
The "Marching Falcons" spent two weeks this July and August of long days and hard work preparing the first part of their half-time show entitled, "Where are the Heroes?" as well as music for football games including the national anthem, fight song, and more!  The two weeks of 8-12 hour days concluded with a preview show in the WRHS Parking Lot showcasing everyone's hard work.  Camp was fantastic and we're excited for the 2016 Season!


5th Annual West Rowan High School Band Mattress Sale!
On Saturday, July 30th, the West Rowan High School Band held it's 5th annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser in the cafeteria lobby.  These mattresses are great products, made in NC and TN, and are sold at prices below retail - the money CFS (Custom Fundraising Solutions) saves on retail space and advertising goes to the band as profit and to the students who brought in customers.  Mark Irvin and his team at CFS run a great event - and what a fun way to kick off the 2016 season!                    Missed the sale, but still interested in looking at a mattress?  Just contact Mr. Trivette!

"Marching Falcons" Basics Camp and Opening Parent Meeting!
Thursday, July 21st, was officially the start to the 2016 Marching Band Season with our annual basics camp for new members, full sectionals for colorguard and percussion, and our opening parents meeting about our 5th annual mattress sale!  We had great attendance from everyone, including a large group of parents!  2016 is off to a great start!  Onward to band camp! :-D


West Rowan Student Leadership Team Staff Retreat!
For several days prior to band camp, the student leadership team for the "Marching Falcons" participated in their annual "staff retreat" focusing on team-building, problem-solving, character-development, conflict-resolution, planning for the upcoming season and more!  There was some canoeing (and struggling to canoe!) as well as a lot of difficult tasks and conversations, but the group did very well and enjoyed a healthy dose of fun and bonding during the week as well.  Good work this week!  Basics camp will be a blast and we're already excited for the 2016 season!  :-D

Drum Majors Attend Western Carolina "Summer Symposium"
While many folks were still out enjoying some time by the pool or sleeping late, Mr. Trivette and the West Rowan Drum Majors (Sarah McCourt and Camryn Nooner) spent a week in mid July on campus at Western Carolina University learning about communication, leadership, problem-solving, conducting, score-study and more!  The symposium faculty are some of the top in the nation and the 18-hour days are full of excitement and learning.  Excellent work, ladies!  We're proud of you and know that you'll help get the 2016 season off to a great start!

West Rowan High School 2016 Graduation Day!
Congratulations to our 2016 seniors as they walked across stage to get their diplomas!  You've done well the past four years and we're very proud of all that you've accomplished!  Special thanks to the graduation band for showing up bright and early for rehearsal and performing for the class of 2016.  Congratulations seniors!  Everyone enjoy your break.  Summer is officially here!


2016 Marching Band Gets Early Start with "Wind Training!"
With most people looking forward to the end of school, the last week of May saw the "Marching Falcons" already working toward next Season.  With drumline and colorguard auditions complete and leadership positions filled, preparations for next season continued with "Wind Training" days where woodwind and brass students got back into the fundamentals of marching and playing with both veterans and rising freshmen alike.  2016 is already looking good!

Solo & Ensemble Participants Bring Home "Superiors!"
On Saturday, May 14th, four West Rowan students (Alejandro Roldan, Sarah McCourt, Jillian Clary and Mary Williams) traveled to Lincolnton Middle School to participate in the South-Central District Solo & Ensemble Music Performance Adjudication.  These four students entered five events (3 solos, a duet and a trio) and brought home one "Excellent" rating and four "superior" ratings.  Congratulations on a job well done!


WRHS Jazz Band Performs at Mt. Ulla EOG Pep Rally
On Friday, May 13th, the WRHS Jazz Band and Cheerleaders travelled to Mt. Ulla Elementary School to perform at the EOG Pep Rally to help students gear up to take their tests next week.  The band provided music before and after the gathering as well as a small pep tune in the middle of the celebration, which had a Star Wars theme and featured teachers having students throw pies in their face!  A great time, with great kids - who are going to rock those tests!

Percussion Masterclass and Rehearsal with Dr. Van Hassel
Also on May 9th, in addition to the jazz combo, West Rowan was visited by Dr. Van Hassel, percussion at UNCP.  Dr. Van Hassel listened to some technique exercises from the percussion ensemble, worked a small rehearsal on mallet ensemble pieces and then gave a short clinic on crash cymbals and accessories.  Thanks to Dr. Van Hassel for working with our WRHS percussionists!


Guest Clinic and Performance by UNCP Jazz Combo
On Monday, May 9th, the Jazz Combo (under the direction of Dr. Vandermeer) first visited the band classes at Carson and then came to clinic and perform for the WRHS band classes.  They played several tunes in various styles from swing, to funk, to calypso and discussed the various roles of instruments, jazz form and how to communicate within an ensemble.  It was a great morning of music and learning!  Thanks to the UNC-Pembroke students and faculty!

WRHS Student Performs Solo with Salisbury Symphony!
On May 7th, 2016, Sarah McCourt (flute) was featured with the Salisbury Symphony as part of a concert highlighting talented high school students from Rowan County.  Sarah performing the first movement of Mozart's Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Orchestra.  The concert also featured other instrumentalists and theatre students from across Rowan County!


West Rowan Band Pancake Supper a Success!
On Saturday, April 23rd, the WRHS Band Boosters hosted their spring Pancake Supper at Salem Lutheran Church.  We had great attendance at this year's event and raised over $2,500 toward our expenses and new uniforms!  Thanks to everyone who came out to work, serve, wash dishes and eat pancakes to support your West Rowan Band Program!

WRHS Trombone Trio Performs for Special Olympics
On Thursday, April 14th, the Special Olympics were held in the West Rowan High School stadium.  The Olympics always begin with the Opening Ceremonies, complete with the parade of schools and athletes.  Following the parade the West Rowan JROTC presented the colors while Eli Long, Payton Robertson and Cheyenne Rowland performed the national anthem.  It was a great day for the Special Olympics at West Rowan!


WRHS Wind Ensemble Earns 4 Straight "Superior" Ratings!
On Monday, March 21st, the West Rowan Wind Ensemble performed at Hickory Ridge HS for the SCDBA Music Performance Assessment (MPA) where they received 4 straight "superior" ratings for their stage and sight-reading performances.   Congratulations to the Wind Ensemble on a job well done!

Collegiate Showcase Percussion Recital
On April 8th, two percussionists from UNC-P Will Camps (WRHS Class of 2011) and Hunter Baxley visited the percussion class to discuss some of their music and their experiences as music majors at UNCP.  That evening, Will and Hunter performed their recital on stage in along with guest performances by 3 other West Rowan alumni: Shaniya Wordsworth (WRHS Class of 2015, UNC-P), Marcus Clonts (WRHS Class of 2015, ASU), and Daniel Winecoff (WRHS Class of 2015, UNC-CH).  Check out the audio file below from the concert!


WRHS Student Performs at 2016 Carolina Band Festival
In mid-February, junior Sarah McCourt (principal flute in the WRHS Wind Ensemble), participated in the 3-day Carolina Band Festival held each year at UNC-Greensboro.  Sarah played with top high school musicians from across the southeastern US and was under the direction of Dr. Mikkelson, Director of Bands at Ohio State University.

WRHS Students attend Woodwind Day at UNC School of the Arts
On Saturday, December 12th, four West Rowan students (Jillian Clary, Alex Garcia, Sarah McCourt and Alejandro Roldan) traveled to the UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC for a day of masterclasses, concerts and clinics with some of the best woodwind teachers and artists in the country.  We're proud of our WRHS students that go the extra mile!


WRHS Band Members Play for Salvation Army Kettle
For the 5th year now, the "Winter Winds" have played for the Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign to help bring out the holiday spirit and spare change around Salisbury.  The group of West Rowan students and alumni was organized and rehearsed for weeks by Camryn Nooner and was conducted by Cassidy Nooner, now a music therapy major at ASU.

2 Students Perform with Mitchell Community Band
On Monday, December 14th, Sarah McCourt (Flute) and Jillian Clary (Clarinet) performed in the 2015 Mitchell Community Band Holiday Concert in Shearer Hall at Mitchell Community College in Statesville.  Under the direction of Mr. Jack Horner, Sarah and Jillian have been rehearsing with the community band all semester along with other musicians from across the area.  All of that hard work paid off well.  Great job ladies!


3 WRHS Students Perform with St. John's Mens Chorus
On Sunday, December 13th, Sarah McCourt (Flute), Alex Ho (Percussion), and Samiyah Wordsworth (Percussion) accompanied the annual Mens Chorus Christmas Concert at St. John's Lutheran Church in Salisbury.  They performed for a packed house and played along side other wonderful musicians on saxophone, cello, piano and organ.  Congratulations to our students on a job well done!

The WINNER of the 2015 UTV Raffle is.....
...David Bolick  of Salisbury, NC!  David is now the proud owner of that shiny blue New Holland Rustler 115 you saw around campus this fall!  David picked up his prize after the end of the fruit delivery and was headed home to unload and try it out.  He said he would probably be taking it out on his hunting trip this weekend!  Thanks to everyone who purchased a raffle ticket to support the band and congratulations once again to David on his New Holland UTV!


8 WRHS Students Perform at UNCW Honor Band Clinic

Two WRHS Alumni Perform in UNCW's top Jazz Ensemble
During the UNCW Honor Band Clinic this year, students and directors were treated to a performance by the top Jazz Band at UNCW while waiting on the results of auditions.  Dakota Gurganus (Class of 2014) and Chase Webb (Class of 2015), now both students at UNCW, both play in that ensemble!  If you look closely in the picture to the left, you can see Dakota in the back row (2nd trumpet from the right) and Chase in the front (2nd alto sax from the left).  Kudos guys!


WRHS Music Students Perform in "The Knight at Dawn"
The Norvell Theatre's 2015 production of the "Magic Tree House Collection: The Knight at Dawn" included 3 WRHS music students including Berkley Loeblein in the lead role as "Annie" and Ke'shun Bradley as "Mustache." (Pictured to the right)  The production also included WRHS student Amber Bouknight.  The cast performed a series of shows for elementary schools Nov. 9-13 followed by two weekends of performances.  The show was fantastic!  Great job guys!

Guest Clinicians Skype in to the WRHS Band Room!
On Thursday, November 19th, the WRHS Band Classes got some help on their chamber ensembles (small groups of musicians instead of full band) for the Prism Concert on Dec. 17th... but NOT by having someone come into the classroom.  Instead Mrs. McNeil at East Rowan HS and Mr. Thomas at Salisbury HS (woodwind and brass experts, respectively) used Skype to visit our class via the internet while standing in their very own band rooms across the county!  Thanks so much to these wonderful educators for their assistance getting ready for our concert! :-D


8 West Rowan Students Accepted to UNCW Honor Band
Sarah McCourt, Caitlyn McDonnell, Alejandro Roldan, Madelyn Dailey, Mackenzie Koontz, Rivers Sides, Elijah Long and Mary Williams were all accepted to the 2015 UNCW Honor Band Clinic to be held December 3-5 in Wilmington, NC. Congratulations to these students!  We hope to see everyone at the concerts at 3:00pm on Saturday, December 5th!

Marcus Clonts (Class of 2015) is currently studying music at Appalachian State University where he also performs with the Wind Ensemble.  The Hayes School of Music sponsored an evening of concerts at the NCMEA 2015 Conference featuring the University Singers, the Jazz Ensemble 1, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Wind Ensemble.  We couldn't get a picture, but great job Marcus!


West Rowan Alumni Perform with UNC-Wilmington
Dakota Gurganus (Class of 2014), Wendy Cheng (Class of 2014) and Chase Webb (Class of 2015) are all currently studying music at UNCW and performed with their Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds at the NCMEA 2015 Conference in Winston-Salem.  The group performed a series of works ranging from the NCBA Contest List to masterworks like Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger and The Hounds of Spring by Alfred Reed.  The concert was fantastic, wonderful performance from our West Rowan alumni!

West Rowan Alumni Perform with UNC-Pembroke
​Will Camps (Class of  2011) and Shaniya Wordsworth (Class of 2015) are both currently music majors at UNCP and performed with their Percussion Ensemble at the North Carolina Music Educators Association 2015 Conference in Winston-Salem.  The group performed a series of works, all in contrasting styles and all by North Carolina composers, 2 of which were world-premier performances.  3 of the composers were even in attendance to speak about their works and see the ensemble perform them.  Great job, guys!  We're proud of our West Rowan Alumni and UNCP Percussionists!


"Marching Falcons" earn 3rd place at "Pirate Cove Classic"
On Saturday, October 24th, the "Marching Falcons" performed at their final competition for the 2015 season, the Porter Ridge "Pirate Cove Classic."  At the end of the day, the band earned awards for 3rd Place Colorguard, 3rd Place Marching, 3rd Place General Effect and earned 3rd Place in Class 2A!  Congratulations to our friends at East Rowan HS who won 1st place in Class 1A!  Good job by all our Rowan County Bands!

2015 "Marching Falcons" 8th Grade Invitational
On Friday, October 23rd, the West Rowan "Marching Falcons" welcomed 33 8th graders from Southeast and West Rowan Middle Schools to our campus.  They spent the afternoon with the staff and section leaders of the "Marching Falcons" learning instrumental technique and music.  Later that evening at the WRHS vs Concord game, they performed the national anthem and stands tunes side-by-side with the "Marching Falcons."  Awesome job guys!  You sounded great and it was a pleasure having you on campus!


WRHS and JCHS Brass Ensemble Perform National Anthem
On Thursday, October 1st, the West Rowan Falcons squared off with the Carson Cougars for a rescheduled football game due to weather concerns for that Friday.  However, although competition on the field was fierce, the two bands put forth a show of camaraderie before kick-off with a performance of the National Anthem with a combined small brass ensemble.  Kudos to you folks for enduring through the rain to give us a great opening to a great game!

Berkley and Camryn on 2015 Homecoming Court!
Berkley Loeblein (Flute) and Camryn Nooner (Alto Sax) were one of the two Freshmen and Sophomore Class Representatives (respectively) on the 2015 Homecoming Court.  Although it rained for most of the game, the "Marching Falcons" stayed through homecoming court to support our band family; the rain can't keep these folks from having a good time!  We're proud of our WRHS Band Students - congrats ladies, you looked beautiful!


440th Army Band Provides Clinics to WRHS Students
On Friday, August 28th, 9 musicians from the 440th US Army National Guard Band provided clinics, masterclasses and mini-concerts to the woodwind, brass and percussion classes at West Rowan High School.  The musicians spent the day at West Rowan and even stayed for the football game where the 440th Vocal Ensemble performed the national anthem and the band members played in the stands with the "Marching Falcons."  It was a great day of music in Mt. Ulla!

WRHS Students Perform for 9th Annual Tomato Festival
On Saturday, August 15th, Madelyn and Camryn provided the national anthem for the 9th annual Woodleaf Tomato Festival at Unity Presbyterian Church.  The festival features local music groups, dancers, arts, crafts, vendors, food and all manner of tomatoes, tomato recipes, tomato queens, tomato eating contests and much more!  If you missed it, be sure to come out next year for the 10th Anniversary - it's sure to be the biggest one yet!


WRHS Alum Finishes 2nd Season with Phantom Regiment
On Saturday, August 8th, H.A. Hoffman (Class of 2012) competed in the DCI World Championship Finals in his second season with Phantom Regiment who placed 7th in finals competition.  H.A. is among the growing number of West Rowan graduates to join the ranks of Drum Corps International, "Marching Music's Major League."  We're proud of all our students, both current and former, and wish the best of luck to those auditioning for the 2016 season!

4th Annual West Rowan Band Mattress Sale a Success!
On Saturday, July 25th, the West Rowan Bands partnered with Custom Fundraising Solutions to host our 4th annual mattress sale!  Thanks to the hard work of students and parents spreading the word to our community (and to the efforts of Mark Irvin and his CFS Set-up Crew and Sales Staff, the band should profit over $3,500 in addition to ~$1,000 in rewards cash and a TV to be raffled for the students!  Thanks to everyone for your support!


WRHS Alumnus Performs with Rowan Big Band All-Stars
For the past  year, Chase Webb (Class of 2015) has been performing with the Rowan Big Band All-Stars at events all around central North Carolina!  Primarily an advocate for the Rowan County Community in Schools, the band puts on a fantastic show and typically plays for charity at church, community and patriotic events.  This picture is from the Faith Fourth of July Concert on June 28th where Chase is performing side by side with band leader and former West Rowan HS Band Director, Dr. Ron Turbyfill!

WRHS Student Performs with Salisbury Symphony
On Saturday, June 6th, senior percussionist Marcus Clonts had the opportunity to perform in the percussion section of the Salisbury Symphony at the annual "Pops at the Post" concert in downtown.  Marcus will graduate on Saturday, June 13th and will attend Appalachian State University in the Fall of 2015 where he plans to major in music performance and eventually transition into music industry.

2015 will see the largest senior class of band students West Rowan has had in a LONG time... 26 Seniors!  It has been a wonderful 4 years and we know you will all go on to do great things.  We wish you all the best!  We'll celebrate our seniors (as well as the rest of the band!) this Saturday, May 30th at the Band Banquet.  See you there!

WRHS plays for Senior Awards and Mt. Ulla EOG Pep Rally!
On Friday, May 22nd, the West Rowan Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble first performed prelude music for the annual Senior Awards Ceremony (along with the Honors Chorus) and then again hit the road to play for another EOG Pep Rally - this time at Mt. Ulla Elementary School!  This was our last stop as ambassadors of West Rowan for 2015!


WRHS Brass Quintet Plays at Flag Changing Ceremony
What to do the morning of Prom?  If you're the WRHS Brass Quintet, you play for the Armed Forces Day Flag Changing Ceremony at the Patriots Flag Concourse and Memorial in Salisbury!  The group provided prelude, interlude and postlude music as well as the National Anthem and service songs for each branch of the armed services. The ceremony was attended by many notables including the Mayor, military officers and personnel, and more.  Great job guys!

West Rowan plays for Hurley & Woodleaf EOG Pep Rallies!
On Friday, May 15th, the West Rowan Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble traveled to Hurley and Woodleaf Elementary Schools to perform for their EOG Kick-off Pep Rallies, help ease some fears about test taking, and even participated in a mass filming of the Hurley Elementary "E3 Express!"


West Student Provides Groundbreaking Music... Literally!
The groundbreaking for the new Wallace Educational Forum (April 18th) began with a luncheon on North Lee Street.  The room was filled with school officials, financial contributors and distinguished guests enjoying their lunch as well as some music provided by senior Chase Webb and his alto saxophone.  Thanks to Chase for sharing his music with the Rowan-Salisbury School community and representing West Rowan well!

WRHS Bands Perform for Oak Park Retirement Community
The residents of the Oak Park Retirement Community got a real treat Thursday, March 26th!  All the bands of West Rowan provided the evening entertainment:  Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble.  The groups performed an hour-long variety concert after dinner concluded for the evening.  Yet another example of our students sharing their talents with our West Rowan Community!  Congrats to all on a great evening of music!


WRHS Student Finalist for Hayes Young Artist Scholarship
Senior Percussionist, Daniel Winecoff, is a finalist for the $30,000 Hayes Young Artist Scholarship at ASU!  Daniel performed live in the final recital competition on Saturday, February 28th at Appalachian State University.  After the recital concluded, top honors went to a very talented vocalist, but Daniel didn't come home empty handed!  Based on his performance, he was awarded a $3,000 scholarship to the Hayes School of Music.  Congratulations Daniel!

4 WRHS Students attend the 2015 UNCG Honor Band!
Congratulations to ALL our students who submitted audition CDs to UNCG.  Results are up!  Special congratulations to Rivers Sides (5th Trumpet), Cassidy Nooner (5th Horn), Matthew Langford (1st Tuba) and Daniel Winecoff (4th Percussion).  Be sure to come see them in concert at UNCG on February 14th!          See the complete 9-10 and 11-12 Honor Band Rosters HERE!


WRHS Student performs under direction of Robert Sheldon
At the SCDBA All-District Clinic on January 30-31 at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Matthew Langford performed as 2nd chair tuba in the 11-12 Senior High Band under the direction of world-renowned composer and conductor, Robert Sheldon.  The group is comprised of the top high school musicians in south central NC and performed some of the most difficult literature for wind band with only 2 days of rehearsal!  Matthew's 2nd chair placement qualifies him to audition for the NC All-State Honor Band in March.  Congratulations to Matthew on his success at the district level!

Novel-Trees on Main.... with Saxophone!
On December 11th, Rowan-Salisbury Schools hosted a night of reading showcasing the "Literacy Trees" elementary students created before the Christmas break.  Adding to the ambiance for the evening was senior saxophonist, Chase Webb who played Christmas carols throughout the evening.  Congrats on great night of music and thanks for sharing you talents with the Rowan-Salisbury community!


Matthew Langford heads to All-American Marching Band!

WRHS Band Members Play for Salvation Army Kettle
For the 4th year now, Cassidy Nooner's "Winter Winds" have played for the Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign to help bring out the holiday spirit and spare change around Salisbury.  The group is completely organized and rehearsed by Ms. Nooner who also writes all of their music!  See the full article on the Salisbury Post HERE.


WRHS Alumni Perform with UNC-Wilmington
Saxophonist Nick Watson (Class of 2013) and clarinetist Wendy Cheng (Class of 2014), now students at UNCW, are performing with their top ensemble, the "Chamber Winds."  In concert at the 2014 Honor Band Clinic on December 5th, they performed a wide variety of literature including National Emblem (Bagley), Fusion (Balmages), Concerto for Cell Phone (Stephenson), Blue Shades (Ticheli) and more!  We're proud of our WRHS Alumni!

Four WRHS Band Alumni lead Macy's Parade!
On Thanksgiving Day, when WCU's 500+ member "Pride of the Mountains" Marching Band leads the 2014 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, 4 WRHS alumni will be among their ranks: Caroline Wood, Kennedy Piatt, H.A. UNC-Greensboro 1st Annual Percussion Symposium
Seven members of the WRHS Percussion Ensemble attended the 1st Annual Percussion Symposium hosted by UNCG Saturday, November 15th.  These students got hands-on experience playing all aspects of percussion including 4-mallet marimba, drum-set, West African hand-drumming, clinics on the All-State solo and more!  The day was filled with percussive-goodness from top to bottom!

WRHS Alumnus Performs with UNC-Pembroke
Will Camps (Class of  2011) is currently a music education major at UNCP and performed with their Wind Ensemble at the North Carolina Music Educators Association 2014 Conference in Winston-Salem.  The ensemble performed Overture to "Candide" by Bernstein (arr. Grundman), Highland Cathedral by Roever/Korb (arr. Dawson), Mother Earth by Maslanka, Endless Rainbows and Evocation by Balmages and American Jazz Suite by Vizzutti.  You can see Will in the far left of this picture in the percussion section!


WRHS Students Accepted to the UNCW Honor Band!
Congratulations to our students accepted to the UNC-Wilmington Honor Band Clinic!  These students will travel to Wilmington, rehearse for 2 days, enjoy masterclasses with the faculty, hear the UNCW bands in concert and give a Finale Concert on Saturday, December 6th!  Congratulations to Grace Morris, Chase Webb, Mackenzie Koontz, Cassidy Nooner, Matthew Langford, Marcus Clonts and Daniel Winecoff!

"Marching Falcons"  Named GRAND CHAMPION!
Congratulations to the "Marching Falcons" on their performance at the Porter Ridge "Pirate Cove Classic."  The band earned awards for 2nd Place Marching, 1st Place Percussion, 1st Place Music (5th highest score of the day), 1st Place Effect (6th highest score of the day), 1st Place Drum Major (3rd highest of the day) and 1st Place in Class 3A.  In addition, the "Marching Falcons" earned a rating of "Superior" and were named the 1A-2A-3A Grand Champion!  A fantastic end to a fantastic season!

Congratulations to the "Marching Falcons" on their success at the South Caldwell "Spartan Southern Classic."  After a LONG day and TWO performances, the "Marching Falcons" returned home with awards for 2nd Place Colorguard, 1st Place Percussion, 1st Place Drum Major, 1st Place Music, 1st Place Marching, 1st Place General Effect and 1st Place overall in Class 2A with a rating of SUPERIOR.  Special congratulations to Cassidy Nooner with the 2nd highest Drum Major score of the entire competition!

Congratulations to Matthew Langford on his selection to the 2015 US Army All-American Marching Band!
The All-American Marching Band is comprised of the top 125 high school musicians from across the United States that receive an all-expenses-paid trip to San Antonio to perform in the Alamodome.  During the bowl week, band members are instructed by educators from top high school, collegiate and DCI groups as well as sessions with the US Army Field Band.  Be sure to watch the performance live on January 3rd at www.banddirector.com during halftime!  Click HERE for more pictures from the Selection Tour at WRHS.
